Cristiano Ronaldo’s final World Cup ended not with one last glorious chapter, but with tears.
Portugal’s hopes of lifting football’s biggest prize came crashing down on Monday night after Mikel Merino struck a dramatic 91st-minute winner to hand Spain a 1-0 victory in the Round of 16, bringing the curtain down on Ronaldo’s extraordinary World Cup career.
As the final whistle echoed around the stadium in Dallas, the 41-year-old stood motionless, hands on his hips, staring into the distance. The reality slowly sank in before the emotions finally took over.
Ronaldo broke down in tears on the pitch before applauding the Portugal supporters and walking slowly down the tunnel with his head bowed.
The defeat almost certainly marks the end of Ronaldo’s World Cup journey. Having already confirmed before the tournament that this would be his final appearance on football’s biggest stage, the Portuguese legend exits without the one trophy that always eluded him.
Ronaldo became the first player to feature at six FIFA World Cups during the group stage and once again played a leading role in Portugal’s campaign. He scored twice against Uzbekistan, converted a penalty in the Round of 32 victory over Croatia and also had another goal ruled out for a marginal offside.
However, goals proved harder to come by in the knockout stages. Against Spain, Ronaldo struggled to influence proceedings, registering just three touches inside the opposition penalty area as Portugal found few openings against a disciplined Spanish defence.
His final chance arrived with virtually the last kick of the match. Bruno Fernandes whipped in a dangerous free-kick, but Ronaldo was unable to make the decisive touch that could have forced extra time.
Instead, Merino’s stoppage-time strike proved decisive, ending Portugal’s campaign in cruel fashion.
Ronaldo leaves international football with a glittering legacy that includes the 2016 European Championship and UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025. Yet despite six attempts across two decades, the FIFA World Cup remains the one honour missing from one of the greatest careers the sport has ever seen.
For Ronaldo, the tears told the story. His greatest dream had slipped away one final time.
