Star Portuguese and Al-Nassr footballer Cristiano Ronaldo’s reaction to Al Wasl fans chanting ‘Messi, Messi’ has gone viral on social media after his team pulled off a 4-0 win in the AFC Cup quarterfinals on Sunday, April 19.

Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 11th minute of Al-Nassr’s quarter-final clash against Al Wasl at Zabeel Stadium. Latching onto a precise cross from Boushal, Ronaldo slotted home his 970th career goal, moving a step closer to the historic 1000-goal mark.

Despite his commanding display, Ronaldo was met with familiar chants of Lionel Messi’s name from opposition fans. Unfazed, the former responded with a pair of defiant gestures that went viral on social media.

Ronaldo first put a finger to his lips, signalling for silence, before following it up with his trademark ‘calma’ gesture, requesting the crowd to stay composed as he continued to dominate the match.

After Ronaldo’s early opener, Iñigo Martínez doubled the advantage in the 24th minute, before Abdulelah Al-Amri struck again just two minutes later to put Al-Nassr in control.

Star left-winger Sadio Mané then sealed the emphatic victory over Al Wasl with a fourth goal in the 80th minute. Ronaldo’s night came to an end in the 67th minute when he was replaced by Abdullah Al-Hamdan, having already laid the foundation for his team’s dominant display.

During his time on the field, Ronaldo registered 24 touches and fired three shots, remaining the focal point of an Al-Nassr attack that has looked sharp throughout the continental campaign.

The West Region quarter-final games, slated for March 3 to 10, were postponed by the Asian Football Confederation because of the impact of the Iran war.
