Marc Guéhi’s all-but-done transfer from Crystal Palace to Liverpool collapsed because manager Oliver Glasner had threatened to walk out, according to a report in The Guardian.
Guéhi, Palace captain and England international defender, was linked to the Premier League defending champions throughout the window. There was suspense about whether the deal would go ahead for weeks.
The sticking point was whether Guehi would be happy to make a switch from being a regular starter at Palace to a team where skipper Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate were established Centre-Backs ahead of him when he wants to fight for a place in England’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Squad.
For Palace, their hand was forced because Guéhi only has a year left in his current contract, and not selling him would have meant letting him go for free next summer. Guéhi had rejected a new deal several times.
The Liverpool deal finally saw some movement on deadline day (Tuesday, September 1), when Liverpool made a £35m (Rs. 413 crore) offer for Guéhi. According the the aforementioned report, Palace chairman, Steve Parish, reluctantly accepted the offer and Guéhi proceeded to get his medical done at Anfield, while a deal sheet (the official document to ratify the deal) had also gone through to the Premier League.
However, after Glasner’s threat, Parish pulled the plug on the deal. Interestingly, Palace had prepared a ‘Thank You’ video for the defender, which has now been leaked. The report said that Liverpool had lined up a private jet to take Guéhi to Merseyside on deadline day.
Guéhi is said to be extremely upset by the outcome, believing he should have been allowed to leave, having behaved professionally and with respect for Palace throughout the window, contrasting with, for example, how Alexander Isak behaved at Newcastle United. The report said that Guéhi is now considering whether he wants to be Palace captain anymore.
Glasner’s situation is not too different. His contract expires at the same time as Guéhi, and he previously expressed his disappointment at Palace’s lack of business in the early days of the window. Ultimately, their inability to find a suitable replacement for Guéhi proved to be the deal-breaker.
