Asian Games bronze medallist Sutirtha Mukherjee starred against her childhood friend Ayhika to stun the Kolkata Thunderblades and sneak an 8-7 win for Dabang Delhi in the opening game of Day 3 of Ultimate Table Tennis Season 7.
The tie started with consecutive all-foreign singles encounters, where Egypt’s Youssef Abdelaziz bounced back after losing the opening game to beat Romania’s Eduard Ionescu 2-1.
Abdelaziz reeled off six successive points in the decider to give Delhi an early lead. Kolkata responded immediately as Singapore’s Zeng Jian overcame Spain’s Maria Xiao 2-1 in a high-quality women’s singles match, edging a thrilling final game 11-9 to level the tie at 3-all.
Maria responded in style, joining forces with Sathiyan Gnanasekaran to bag a 2-1 win against Jian and Ankur Bhattacharjee in the mixed doubles, restoring Delhi’s lead at 5-4.
A vital match awaited Sathiyan and Ankur, but the latter trumped his senior pro, bagging two golden points and winning 3-0, as Kolkata went up 7-5 in the tie.
That left Sutirtha needing to win all three games to seal the tie for Delhi. She rose to the occasion with a dominant 11-6, 11-2, 11-7 win against Ayhika, bagging Delhi’s second consecutive victory of the tournament.
In the second match of the day, Ahmedabad APL Pipers took on defending champions U Mumba.
France’s Lilian Bardet handed Mumbai an early advantage with a 2-1 victory over Adrien Rassenfosse. Wales’ Anna Hursey then doubled her team’s momentum, beating India’s Manika Batra 2-1 to extend Mumbai’s lead to 4-2.
Ahmedabad hit back in the mixed doubles, where Sofia Polcanova and Payas Jain edged past Manush Shah and Anna Hursey 2-1 to reduce the deficit and make it 5-4 in the tie.
Payas then stunned Manush with a 2-1 win to level the tie at 6-all, setting up a winner-takes-all showdown between Sofia Polcanova and Anusha Kutumbale.
Sofia pulled off a dominant 3-0 win as Ahmedabad finished with a 9-6 victory over U Mumba, who suffered their second consecutive defeat.
