The death toll from a bomb blast at a cafe in Syria’s capital, Damascus, has climbed to 10 people, authorities said on Friday.

As many as 21 people were left wounded in the bomb blast. The bombing was the country’s deadliest attack since last year’s church bombing, AFP reported.

The explosion occurred on Thursday near the Palace of Justice, a prominent government building in the heart of the capital. The blast triggered panic in the crowded neighbourhood as emergency responders rushed to the scene.

According to Syrian authorities, the explosion was caused by a homemade explosive device planted at the cafe. The bomb reportedly weighed around one kilogram and was packed with metal fragments to maximise casualties.

The country’s health ministry had initially reported nine deaths and 20 injuries, but later revised the toll to 10 dead and 21 wounded.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, and investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the bombing.

The incident comes as Syria’s new leadership, headed by President Ahmed al-Sharaa following the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, continues efforts to restore stability, tighten security and reunify the country after years of conflict.

Despite those efforts, Damascus has witnessed several deadly incidents over the past year.

The most lethal attack before Thursday’s bombing took place in June 2025, when a suicide bomber targeted a church in the Syrian capital, killing 25 people. The attack was later claimed by a Sunni Islamist group, while Syrian authorities blamed the Islamic State group.

More recently, in May, a soldier was killed in a car bombing in Damascus’s Old City, underscoring the continued security challenges facing the country’s new government.
