External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar is set to visit the United States next week as part of India’s ongoing diplomatic engagement with Washington, just days after the India–European Union free trade agreement was concluded amid rising trade tensions with the US.
He is expected to attend a key critical minerals meeting in Washington in early February and is also likely to meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the visit.
The visit follows a phone conversation between Jaishankar and Rubio on January 13, during which the two leaders discussed bilateral trade negotiations and the scope for expanding cooperation in the civil nuclear sector. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor later indicated that the two sides had also spoken about a possible in-person meeting in February.
After the call, Jaishankar said in a post on X that the discussion covered a wide range of strategic areas, including trade, critical minerals, nuclear cooperation, defence and energy. He added that both sides had agreed to remain in touch on these and other issues, signalling continued engagement at the highest levels.
India and the United States have set an ambitious target of more than doubling bilateral trade to USD 500 billion by 2030, with critical minerals and energy cooperation emerging as key focus areas in the evolving partnership.
The visit is also significant after the signing of the India–European Union free trade agreement (FTA) amid tariff tensions with the United States.
