The gas leak in a private seafood processing unit in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district has now claimed three more lives, taking the death toll to five so far. Dozens of people remain on ventilator support, a bulletin released by the Health and Family Welfare Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu on Monday said.

Opposition Members, from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and communist parties, of the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly have asked the Speaker to list this issue of the ammonia gas leak during today’s session for discussion, ANI reported.

The gas leak was reported yesterday in a privately-owned seafood processing and exporting unit during routine operations. A total of 67 people were taken to the hospitals following the incident.

The tragedy occurred in the Manjangaranai area of the district. The affected people are currently undergoing treatment at four different hospitals – Venkateshwara Medical College Hospital, Vels Medical College Hospital, Stanley Medical College Hospital, and RGGGH, Chennai.
