In a shocking incident, four members of a family, including two young children, were found charred to death inside a car in a forested area near Tirunelveli district, police said on Thursday. Preliminary investigations suggest the family died by suicide, allegedly driven to take the extreme step due to severe financial distress.

The deceased have been identified as Mohammed Rafi, his wife Seyathu Nasrin Fathima, and their two children, Mohammed Kaja and Abrin Fathima, residents of Periyar Nagar in Nandambakkam, Chennai.

In a sight that shook locals to the core, the bodies of the children were hugging the body of their mother in the back seat of the car.

According to police, locals in the Pettai Kulam area under the jurisdiction of Thisayanvilai police station noticed the completely burnt car and alerted authorities. Fire and rescue personnel, along with the police, rushed to the spot and recovered the four severely burnt bodies from inside the vehicle. The remains were later sent for post-mortem examination.

Initial findings indicate that the family had recently sold their house in Chennai in an attempt to clear mounting debts. However, investigators believe that financial pressure persisted, leaving them under severe stress.

Police said the family had travelled from Chennai to Tirunelveli in their car. During the trip, they visited the Mukhideen Dargah in the Athangarai Pallivasal area. CCTV footage reportedly shows them donating their belongings there just hours before the incident.

Investigators believe the family then drove to a secluded forest area, where the car was found. Forensic examination suggests the vehicle was locked from inside. Police suspect that petrol, allegedly purchased earlier, was used to set the car on fire.

Officials said Mohammed Rafi, who was seated in the front, was completely charred, while his wife and children were found in the back seat. The position of the bodies suggests the children were close to their mother at the time of the incident.

Relatives from Alwar Thirunagari in Thoothukudi district, Rafi’s hometown, later identified the bodies.

Police are also examining the possibility of any mechanical fault or fuel leak, though early evidence points to suicide. A detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the full circumstances leading to the deaths, including the extent of financial liabilities and any other contributing factors.
