Senior TDP leader and MLA Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy said Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy revealed his political desperation by announcing that the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) would have his proposal to develop Mavigun (Machilipatnam - Vijayawada - Guntur region) as the capital of Andhra Pradesh as a major election plank in 2029.
Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s inconsistency on the capital issue couldn’t be more glaring, as he had come up with the idea of three capitals a few months after pledging support to Amaravati on the floor of the Legislative Assembly, he noted and pointed out that even after biting the dust in the 2024 elections, he did not realise his folly and went on to suggest that Mavigun should be developed as the capital even as works costing more than ₹50,000 crore were progressing at a brisk pace in Amaravati. The YSRCP would pay a heavy price yet again for Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s political expediency, Mr. Chandramohan Reddy said.
Addressing media persons at the TDP central office near Mangalagiri on Thursday, Mr. Chandramohan Reddy recalled that Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy had initially agreed to a capital located between Guntur and Vijayawada, and pivoted to ‘three capitals’ after coming to power. No State would locate its capital along a national highway, he said, and alleged that Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s latest plan was clearly intended to throw the over 50,000 acres of pooled land into a quandary thereby jeopardising the huge investments made in Amaravati.
Mr. Chandramohan Reddy highlighted the passage of the AP Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026 in the Parliament as a proof of the political acceptance which Amaravati had gained over the years, and advised Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy to at least now respect the public opinion and go with it in the interest of the people.
