Delhi’s Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) has arrested Dr Vinod Ranga in connection with the alleged irregularities in the procurement of medicines and medical equipment worth about Rs 650 crore, sources told CNN-News18.

This marks the first arrest by the ACB in connection with the alleged scam that has cast a shadow over Delhi’s public health administration.

What Is The Case?

The alleged case pertaining to irregularities in the public health system revolves around Central Procurement Agency (CPA), which was established to centralize purchases for government hospitals and mohalla clinics.

The aim was to cut costs through bulk buying and to ensure transparency to the system. However, there are allegations that the officials within the CPA indulged in overbilling, manipulation of vendor selection, showing inflated orders and procurement at prices significantly above market rates.

A complaint into the matter sparked public scrutiny, after which the Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) and the Chief Minister directed a formal probe into the matter.

Subsequently, an FIR was registered by the capital’s Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), with reports suggesting around 10 doctors and 45 officials connected with the case remain under scrutiny.

Whistleblowers named CPA’s Chief Medical Officer in connection with irregularities. Later, the Director of Health Services (DHS) Dr Vatsala Aggarwal was also removed from his position amid mounting public attention and concerns.

At present, an investigation into the matter is underway.
