Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta wrote a letter to Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, calling for action to stop illegal sand mining along the Yamuna River near the Delhi-UP border.

In her letter, Gupta noted the growing risk of flooding in the national capital due to the weakening of river embankments caused by illegal sand mining activities.

Warning of long-term ecological consequences, Gupta pointed out that the illegal extraction of sand is not only altering the river’s natural flow but also contributing to erosion and environmental degradation.

She referred to repeated observations by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which has consistently raised concerns about the environmental impact of illegal sand mining.

“The NGT has consistently flagged illegal sand mining as a serious environmental issue," the letter noted, underscoring the need for immediate regulatory intervention.

The chief minister also expressed concern for the riverbank communities, many of whom are affected by shifting river patterns and damage to the riverbed.

She stated that these activities disrupt the ecological balance and threaten local livelihoods.

Describing the issue as an inter-state challenge, Gupta proposed joint enforcement efforts between the Delhi and Uttar Pradesh governments.

She called for coordinated demarcation of jurisdiction along the Yamuna to eliminate confusion in enforcement and enable effective monitoring.

“The absence of clear boundaries has complicated monitoring and action," Gupta said, suggesting that this ambiguity has allowed illegal operations to continue unchecked.

Seeking a collaborative solution, Gupta urged the UP government to initiate administrative coordination and partner with Delhi in tackling the problem.

The appeal comes amid continued reports of illegal sand mining along the Yamuna, despite existing restrictions and earlier warnings from environmental authorities.
