Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday told the Lok Sabha that the deadline for the Delhi-Mumbai expressway has been revised to June.

Gadkari said the Delhi-Vadodara section of the expressway will be ready by May while the section from Vadodara to Mumbai will be completed by June.

He, however, said the works in three packages in Gujarat are targeted for completion in 2027-2028. “…the revised scheduled date for completion for the section from Delhi to Vadodara is May 2026 and for the section from Vadodara to Mumbai is June 2026 except works in 3 packages in Gujarat which are targeted for completion in financial year 2027-28," he said, replying to a set of questions from Mumbai North Central MP Varsha Eknath Gaikwad.

Gadkari further said out of 1,350 km of the length, about 875 km is open to traffic. Till July 2025, only the 774 km section between Delhi and Mumbai was operational, he said.

Last year, News18 had reported that the progress on five packages – a collective length of 140 km between Surat and the Gujarat-Maharashtra border – of the Delhi-Mumbai expressway had been delayed resulting in further pushing the deadline for the project, which is divided into 48 packages. Later, while two packages picked up pace, work on three sections – collective length of 90 km – remained slow; this section is near Surat in Gujarat.

The Union minister told the House that the packages were delayed due to issues relating to land acquisition, delay in permission for tree felling and utility shifting, and concessionaire default. He said as of now, the cost of implementation is within the sanctioned cost of the overall corridor.

WHAT IS THE STATUS OF NH-66 MUMBAI-GOA?

Sharing updates about the 485 km Mumbai to Goa national highway 66, Gadkari said the civil construction works for its development to four lanes began in a phased manner under 12 project packages in December 2011.

“As on date, four-lane work has been completed in 465 km length and the works in balance 20 km length is under implementation with target for completion in phased manner in June. The project was delayed due to land hindrances, delay in clearances and slow progress by some of the contractors," he said.

Gaikwad asked about the corrective steps being taken to enforce accountability, ensure quality standards and expedite completion of all NHAI projects connecting Mumbai with other major cities. He replied that regular meetings to review the progress of these projects are held with all stakeholders, including the state governments, to expedite the progress and ensure early completion of all projects connecting Mumbai.
