The Delhi Police has busted an inter-state trafficking syndicate involved in the buying and selling of infants, and arrested 12 accused during the operation.

An official told CNN-News18 that five infants were rescued by the police, adding that the arrests were made in Delhi and Rajasthan.

According to the official, infants were brought in from other states by forging birth-related documents. The newborn babies were then sold to needy parents in exchange for lakhs of rupees.

Some infants were also sold in Haryana. So far, the probe has confirmed that over 20 babies were sold across Delhi-NCR, said the person familiar with the matter.

Investigators are currently probing the modus operandi of the syndicate, along with its inter-state links.

An investigation is underway into the matter. Further details are awaited.
