Delhi is slated to get a new mega railway terminal at Bijwasan by June this year. The facility is expected to ease congestion at New Delhi and Old Delhi stations and streamline train operations across the capital. The station’s redevelopment is part of a long-planned mega project that had been on hold until now
The Bijwasan terminal is part of a long-pending plan first announced in 2008 to decongest Delhi’s core railway stations by developing large terminals on the city’s outer edges.
The plan aims to route trains according to their direction, enabling smoother operations, improved punctuality, and the possibility of introducing more services. Anand Vihar, Bijwasan, Holambi Kalan, and Shakurbasti were identified as key locations for this purpose.
“Bijwasan is almost in the final stage, it should be operational by June or July this year," Northern Railway General Manager Ashok Kumar Verma told News18.
The terminal is designed to handle a large share of trains heading towards Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Currently, Bijwasan has just two platforms, but the upgraded station will have eight platforms. Over 80 percent of the construction work has already been completed.
One of the biggest hurdles was the lack of connectivity to the station and tracks due to pending tree-cutting permissions. “Earlier, the station work got stuck because of connectivity issues. There were problems related to access and clearances, including tree-related issues. Now the work is going on in full swing," Verma said.
The importance of Bijwasan lies in its location. It sits close to IGI Airport Terminal-3, Urban Extension Road-2 and the Dwarka Sector-21 Metro station, making it easily accessible for passengers. A bus terminal is also proposed nearby, which could turn the area into a major multi-modal transport hub.
Railways officials believe the terminal will play a key role in easing pressure on New Delhi, Old Delhi and Sarai Rohilla stations by shifting select trains to Bijwasan. This redistribution is expected to improve passenger comfort and help trains run more on time.
Speaking about other terminals planned under the same decongestion strategy, Verma said work is progressing at multiple locations. “At Shakur Basti, there are multiple components involved. One is that we are creating a new station. Earlier, the station work was started and it got stuck because of some connectivity issues. Now the work is going on in full swing," he said, adding that the new three-platform station there could be operational around August.
He also pointed to challenges in turning some locations into full-fledged terminals. “Then the issue of getting connected from the Delhi side to that area and making a major terminal there… there are issues of encroachment and slum areas. We are working on that and we hope to get that also sorted out," Verma said.
Apart from Bijwasan and Shakur Basti, work on the Holambi Kalan terminal is also underway. “Holambi Kalan DPR work is going on. We finalised the DPR," the GM said.
Once these projects are completed, the Railways expects a improvement in passenger experience in Delhi, with reduced crowding at central stations, better train regulation and the ability to introduce additional services on busy routes.
