Telangana Dental Council counters medical body’s advisory; backs oral surgeons' training and DCI norms

The Telangana Dental Council (TDC) has asserted that registered oral and maxillofacial surgeons are qualified to perform facial aesthetic procedures and hair transplantation.

HYDERABAD: Telangana Dental Council (TDC) on Saturday issued a notice clarifying that registered oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMFS), who are trained under the standards prescribed by Dental Council of India, are qualified and authorised to perform facial aesthetic procedures and hair transplantation. The notice is seen as a response to a circular issued by the Telangana Medical Council (TGMC), which advised dentists and oral surgeons against performing hair transplants and cosmetic treatments, citing "inadequate training". The council's advisory follows clarification from the National Medical Commission."Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are specialist surgeons who diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions affecting the mouth, jaws, face, and neck," the notice stated. In its notice, TDC stated these surgeons were trained to perform minor oral surgeries, surgically treat soft tissue injuries, fractures, gunshot wounds, aesthetic deformities of the jaws and face, and conduct aesthetic facial surgery.
