At Rims, six to eight such cases are being reported daily
Ranchi: With the onset of monsoon, dermatologists in the city are reporting a steady rise in skin- and scalp-related ailments, cautioning that prolonged exposure to moisture and sweat can trigger fungal infections and aggravate existing conditions. At the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) here, six to eight such cases are being reported daily, said Dr Prabhat Kumar from the dermatology department. “Three conditions are most common during this season — pityriasis versicolor, tinea cruris (both fungal infections) and dandruff. While pityriasis causes discoloured patches on the chest and back, tinea cruris affects the groin and other moist skin folds.
Dandruff also worsens due to high humidity,” he said.Doctors attributed the surge to damp clothing, wet footwear and excessive sweating — common during rains — which create an ideal breeding environment for fungi. “Many people wear wet clothes or shoes for long durations after getting drenched, which significantly increases the risk of infection,” Kumar added, noting that pityriasis versicolor tends to recur in warm, humid conditions.
Dr Purva, a dermatologist at Orchid Hospital, said fungal infections are particularly common in underarms, groin and between the toes. “Skin must be dried thoroughly after bathing or rain exposure. Cleanliness of nails and scalp is equally important as infections can spread from these areas. Humidity also leads to increased hair fall and scalp itching,” she said, recommending the use of cooling powders to keep skin dry.She also flagged a rise in dermatitis and skin irritation cases, cautioning against skipping sunscreen during cloudy weather. “Ultraviolet rays penetrate cloud cover, so sunscreen remains essential outdoors. Wearing loose cotton clothes and avoiding synthetics can also help,” she said.General physician Dr Ramesh Ranjan noted an increase in patients with itching and rashes in recent days. “Most cases are linked to poor drying habits and rain exposure. Maintaining hygiene and seeking timely treatment can prevent complications,” he said.
