Bangladesh’s crowded capital, Dhaka, has launched its first AI-powered traffic enforcement system to tackle congestion and improve road discipline in one of the world’s most gridlocked cities.

Traffic in the city of over 22 million people frequently causes chaos, with buses, cars, motorcycles and rickshaws competing for limited road space. Police officers often face arguments and confrontations while issuing fines manually.

“Those who violate the rules turn against us," traffic sergeant SM Nazim Uddin told AFP.

“But since AI was introduced, people behind the wheel have started obeying the law — and we have been spared the everyday quarrels," he added.

In April, Dhaka police connected traffic cameras to AI software capable of automatically detecting offences such as signal violations, lane breaches and illegal parking.

Drivers Receive Instant Fines via Text

Motorist Hannan Rahman Jibon, 28, said he was among the first to be fined under the new system.

“I ran a red light and the owner of my car, who was sitting at home, received a text message saying that the vehicle had violated traffic rules," said Jibon, who received an automatic 2,000 taka ($16) fine, the news agency reported.

“I am more careful now, with cameras installed in many different parts," he added.

A study by the US National Bureau of Economic Research previously ranked Dhaka as the world’s “slowest city". According to a World Bank and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology study, average traffic speeds are just 4.8 kilometres per hour, making walking faster than driving.

City police spokesman NM Nasiruddin said the AI system is already showing results.

“We have started getting results," Nasiruddin said, adding, “We have prosecuted at least 300 vehicles."

Officials said manual enforcement will gradually be phased out as AI coverage expands across the city.
