Jyotika, one of Tamil cinema’s most celebrated actresses, made her comeback with ‘36 Vayathinile’ after a break post-marriage and has since been exploring opportunities in Bollywood.
But a recent remark at a Hindi film promotion event has stirred up a storm among Tamil fans. Jyotika’s statement that sparked the debate. Speaking at the 'Shaitaan' press meet, Jyotika said: “I have acted with almost all the leading actors in South India. But women don’t get much importance there, not even on posters. People like Mammootty and Ajay Devgn give women prominence.”Her comment was widely perceived as an indirect criticism of Kollywood and other South industries.
Fans dig out her own past films
The remark went viral on social media, triggering sharp reactions. Fans quickly pointed out that Jyotika herself was prominently featured in posters of blockbuster films like ‘Chandramukhi’, ‘Kaakha Kaakha’, ‘Vaali’ and ‘Mozhi’.One fan questioned: “Isn’t that the same Kollywood which always gave you space on posters?”Others argued that while an actor may seek new opportunities, “criticizing the industry that gave her stardom is unfair.”
‘Unnecessary comparison’, say Tamil fans
While a section tried to defend her, the majority of Tamil cinema lovers branded Jyotika’s statement an “unnecessary comparison.” Many expressed disappointment that an actress who rose to fame through Tamil films was now undermining the same industry, especially when her Hindi projects are about to release.
Jyotika’s shift to Bollywood
Jyotika moved to Mumbai with her husband Suriya and their children in 2023. Her last Tamil film was ‘Udan Pirappe’ (2021). Since then, she has been focusing on Hindi and other languages, appearing in ‘Shaitaan’, ‘Srikanth’, and ‘Dabba Cartel’. With more Bollywood projects lined up, she seems determined to carve out a long innings in Hindi cinema—though this controversy might complicate her journey.
