The speculation began after comments from United Cajun Navy Incident Commander Josh Gill during the search operation.

Gill said Nolan was last seen talking to a girl on the north end of Horn Island before he became separated from others in the area. Reports identified the young woman only as Katie. According to information shared publicly, the pair spent some time together before going their separate ways.

Katie’s mother, Gracie McCormack, later stated on social media that her daughter had been with Nolan that day but left before he disappeared.

She added that Katie did not know what happened to him afterward. At this stage, Katie is the only woman publicly linked to Nolan’s final known hours, but there is nothing that confirms the two were romantically involved.

Nolan Wells disappearance: What happened on Horn Island?

According to authorities, Nolan was last seen around 3 p.m. on July 4 near the northwest end of Horn Island. He was wearing blue swim trunks and sunglasses and did not have a shirt on. Friends later reported that he had been speaking with Katie before they parted ways.

Investigators have not publicly explained what happened after that interaction. Concern grew when Nolan did not return home that evening. His family reported him missing, triggering a large search involving the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, the U.S. Coast Guard, Gulf Islands National Seashore personnel and volunteers from the United Cajun Navy. Search crews covered both land and water as they worked to find the teenager. The search ended on July 6 when a body was found near the northwestern end of Horn Island. Nolan’s family later confirmed that he had died. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death, and many questions about his final hours remain unanswered.
