No verified statements back the allegation as experts highlight the Vatican’s long-standing position on disarmament

Did The Pope Support Iran’s Nuclear Programme? Trump’s Claim Faces Scrutiny
A fresh controversy is brewing after Donald Trump claimed that Pope Leo XIV supported Iran’s nuclear ambitions — a statement that quickly spread and triggered debate online.
But when you look at what has actually been said, the picture appears very different.
According to the Sunday Guardian, there is no verified statement in which the Pope has backed Iran’s nuclear programme. In fact, historical evidence indicates that the Vatican has always called for nuclear disarmament and peace discussions, not escalation.
So where did such a misconception come from?
It would appear to be part of a broader reading of the Pope’s words regarding war and international tensions. Pope Leo XIV has often talked about the human impact of violence and has warned leaders against engaging in conflicts – statements that have now, perhaps, been politicized in this particular situation.
This is not the first time the two have found themselves at odds.
Tensions had already surfaced earlier when the Pope called for restraint and criticised escalating violence in the ongoing Iran conflict. This statement was made from a humanitarian perspective, highlighting the dangers of killing, and was starkly different from Trump’s attitude towards security and deterrence.
Trump, while criticising the Pope, suggested that being “soft" on Iran could have serious consequences, especially when it comes to nuclear weapons and global security.
However, those remarks were not backed by any specific quote or official position from the Vatican, which is why the claim has come under scrutiny.
The Pope’s actual messaging has remained fairly consistent.
He has been addressing matters related to the importance of peace, caution, and reduction of conflicts by stressing the effects that war can cause. Thus, he has never supported increased nuclear arms but rather called upon limiting the number of weapons in existence.
So as things stand, there is no evidence to support the claim that the Pope endorsed Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
If anything, the available record suggests the opposite — a consistent call for peace, caution and de-escalation in an already tense global environment.
