On her 8th death anniversary, we revisit a lesser-known chapter from the making of 'Chandni' a chapter that could have changed history. It is hard to imagine anyone but Sridevi as 'Chandni'.
The white sarees, the innocence, and her grace is still evergreen. But here’s the twist, she almost did not do the film. Let’s revisit how Yash Chopra convinced her, and how a bold creative gamble became a cinematic milestone.
A risk of violence
In The Romantics, Yash Chopra spoke candidly about the time when Chandni was conceived.“Our industry had reached the saturation point of violence. So, I was like, I will do the biggest gamble of my life, whatever happens.
I won’t make a film with a formula or calculation. I will make a film that will touch my heart. I started Chandni.”It was a bold shift and at a time when action ruled, he chose romance. No formulas, no compromises, just emotion.
The star he didn’t know how to approach
Yash Chopra had never worked with Sridevi before, but Amitabh Bachchan showed him 'Moondram Pirai,' which deeply impressed him. There was just one problem, as revealed by Anil Kapoor, Sridevi was “the top star at that time,” and Yash Chopra “didn’t know how to approach her.”
That’s when Boney Kapoor stepped in. He helped convince Sridevi to take on the titular role. The collaboration was set. But another hurdle was waiting.
The white wardrobe disagreement
Yash Chopra had a clear vision, 'Chandni' would wear only white. For him, it symbolised purity and innocence, but Sridevi was not convinced. She found the outfits dull. She had reservations about an all-white look. Her concerns did not stop there, even her mother questioned the idea, pointing out that white was not considered festive in their community.
Still, Yash Chopra stood firm. Despite the doubts, Yash Chopra reassured her with conviction. “I have faith in you as an actor and in your performance, if you have faith in me as a director, I like to present you as I want.” He believed in his presentation. He believed in her performance.
In another revealing anecdote, Karan Johar shared that he once found Yash Chopra reading Vogue in his office for costume references. Chopra was uncompromising.
He would cancel “50-60 costumes” if they did not match his creative direction and the white remained.
A gamble that made history
The risk paid off, 'Chandni' became one of the most celebrated romantic dramas in Hindi cinema. It featured Rishi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna in pivotal roles, but Sridevi’s luminous presence in white defined the film. What once seemed dull became iconic? What felt risky became timeless? Today, 'Chandni' remains one of Sridevi’s finest performances and a character that captured innocence, strength, and romance in equal measure.
