As chilling details continue to emerge in the Palghar man’s murder by his wife and her lover, a report has now claimed the accused woman had asked the victim’s elder brother to install new tiles atop his burial. The victim’s brother works as a daily wage labourer and is the eldest among the four brothers.

According to the Hindustan Times, 34-year-old Ajay Chouhan said he was not aware that he was burying his own brother.

Chaman Devi (28) and her paramour Monu Sharma (20) were arrested in Pune on the evening of July 22, a day after the decomposed body of her husband, Vijay Chouhan (34), was exhumed from the couple’s home at Gangnipada in Nallasopara, a distant suburb of Mumbai.

According to police, the duo killed Chouhan and buried his body under floor tiles around two weeks ago.

The report claims Ajay Chouhan was asked by Chaman Devi to fix some tiles at her place, which she said were removed to get some work done on a pipeline.

“I did not know I was burying my own brother," said Ajay Chouhan.

“She (Chaman Devi) told me the tiles in their house were removed to work on some pipeline and asked me to come over to fix it," he added.

According to the police, the duo killed Vijay Chouhan and buried his body under floor tiles around two weeks ago.

The crime came to light when two brothers of Chouhan went to his home and noticed a foul smell emanating from the floor.

Neighbours informed Chouhan’s brothers that Vijay Chouhan had not been seen since July 10 and his wife had also been missing since July 19, said police.

On being alerted, a police team arrived at the house and exhumed the body in the presence of doctors, forensic experts and the local tehsildar.

Commenting on the matter, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone III), Suachas Bawche from Virar, told reporters that the two accused were next-door neighbours.

“They wanted to get married, but saw Vijay Chouhan as a hurdle. They then decided to kill him," the official said.

The HT report claims the victim’s wife had been repeatedly calling Ajay to install new tiles, but he could only make time on July 19, 2025, which was two days before the police recovered the body.

“When I asked her why Vijay was not answering his phone, she told me he bought a new phone and angrily left the house to stay at his workplace in Kandivali. But when I inquired at his workplace, I was told that he had quit the job eight days ago," the victim’s brother said.

Meanwhile, a Palghar court on Wednesday remanded the accused woman and her paramour in police custody till July 30.

They have been booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 103 (murder), 238 (destruction of evidence) and 3(5) (common intention), and further investigation was underway.
