Dillon Brooks is one of those players you either love or hate, but lately, the headlines haven't had much to do with his defensive intensity or his on-court "villain" persona. Instead, he’s making news for some serious legal drama while he sits on the sidelines. Here is a breakdown of what's been happening with the Phoenix Suns forward.
What Happened to Dillon Brooks? Suns Forward Hit With Reckless Driving Ticket After DUI Arrest
The news currently making waves is about a reckless driving ticket. According to police reports, Brooks was clocked going 85 mph in a 45 mph zone in Scottsdale.
What makes this story stand out isn't just the number on the radar gun, it’s the officer’s reaction. The police noted that Brooks’ speed posed a “catastrophic” risk to the public. Driving 40 mph over the limit in a busy area is a major deal, it’s a bad look for a veteran player who is supposed to be a leader in the locker room.
He was cited for reckless driving and exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 mph. Unlike a DUI arrest, he was ticketed and released at the scene. This speeding news came to light right as Brooks was already dealing with a separate arrest. On March 6, 2026, he was pulled over in Scottsdale around 1 a.m. for failing to stay in his lane.
The bodycam footage from that night is pretty wild. The officer told Brooks, "It smells like a dispensary in your car," and questioned him about marijuana use.
Brooks denied smoking, but he was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Brooks reportedly blew a 0.0 on the breathalyzer, meaning alcohol wasn't the issue. In Arizona, you can still be charged with a DUI for being under the influence of drugs (like marijuana). Police took blood samples, and everyone is currently waiting on those results. The timing of all this couldn’t be worse. Brooks is actually having a career-best season, averaging about 21 points per game and helping the Suns exceed expectations.
However, he hasn't played since late February because of a fractured left hand.He had surgery on the hand and was just seen recently with his cast off, but he’s still not cleared to play. Between the broken hand and the mounting legal fees, Brooks is finding out the hard way that things can go south very quickly when you "press the gas" too hard—both on and off the court.
