Several factors are cited for the appointment of Dinesh Trivedi, 75, as India’s new High Commissioner to Bangladesh.

Foremost among them is that, as a politician of Gujarati heritage who has represented West Bengal throughout his career and speaks several languages, including Bangla, he is seen as well placed to help reset ties with Dhaka.
