Discoms geared up for monsoon related hazards

New Delhi: In a bid to prevent accidents, minimise outages and ensure swift restoration of power during the monsoon, Delhi’s power distribution companies have begun preventive maintenance of transformers and switchgear, deployed Quick Response Teams, set up dedicated war rooms for round-the-clock monitoring and taken measures to reduce rain-induced disruptions.Delhi’s electricity distribution is largely divided among three discoms -- BRPL supplies power to south and west Delhi, while BYPL to east and central Delhi and Tata Power DDL to north and northwest Delhi.BRPL and BYPL and Tata Power-DDL said their monsoon preparedness plans are aimed at ensuring uninterrupted power supply while safeguarding consumers from rain-related electrical hazards. The discom said power supply may be switched off temporarily in vulnerable or waterlogged areas as a preventive safety measure to avoid accidents.Meanwhile, Tata Power-DDL said it has completed pre-monsoon inspections of poles, transformers and cables, conducted current leakage testing of electrical poles, streetlights, ATMs and public installations, and carried out safety audits at more than 5,300 schools, hospitals and other critical facilities. The utility has also deployed 24x7 emergency response teams, particularly in flood-prone areas, besides undertaking preventive tree trimming to avoid disruptions.
