Several prominent Indian players, including current national champion Diya Chitale and Commonwealth Games gold medallists G Sathiyan and Harmeet Desai, will feature in the UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Tournament starting here on September 7.
The tournament has received 2958 entries. The Delhi State Table Tennis Association is hosting a national ranking tournament for the first time since 2008, although the Table Tennis Federation of India organised one in the capital in 2012 with Haryana’s support.
The tournament will take place from September 7 to 14 at the Thyagraj Stadium. Players will compete in 12 events, including the senior, U-19, U-17, U-15, U-13, and U-11 categories.
The men’s field includes national champions Sathiyan, Harmeet, Anthony Amalraj, and Soumyajit Ghosh, who stepped away from the national scene after the 2012 London Olympics due to personal reasons.
Chitale is the favourite in the women’s field, which also features veteran Mouma Das, Madhurika Patkar, Reeth Rishya, and Divya Deshpande.
Delhi-based star Manika Batra will not participate as she is occupied with international commitments, and her world ranking has slipped to 55.
Gurpreet Singh, president of DSTTA, noted that the number of entries, 2958, indicates strong interest in the tournament. He mentioned that he couldn’t recall the last time a national ranking event had so many entries and assured that they are fully prepared to host the event.
National coach and Dronacharya awardee Sandeep Gupta, also part of the organising committee, remarked that with so many national champions competing, it provides a great opportunity for budding players in Delhi to observe and learn from them. Playing against the best in the country will also help them enhance their skills.
