Gaya: Refuting the impression that work on the Rs 2,390 crore Vishnupad corridor project has slowed down, Gaya DM Shashank Shubhankar said the project was progressing as planned and work on the detailed project report (DPR) would begin soon.On the proposed demolition required for smooth execution of the project, the DM said the proposal was awaiting the state cabinet’s approval. Once the cabinet gives its nod, the process will move forward, he said. Before any demolition is carried out, all affected property owners will receive financial compensation in accordance with the rules, he said, adding that full justice would be ensured for those affected.Admitting there were initial concerns among people likely to be impacted by the demolition of structures for widening access roads and developing pilgrim-friendly infrastructure, Shashank said the issue was being addressed effectively.“While preparing the DPR, the concerns of the local stakeholders would be given due consideration and their demands would be accommodated to the possible extent,” Shashank said.
According to sources, nearly 600 houses and other structures may be demolished under the project. However, some structures of religious and heritage importance, including small temples and a Gurudwara, though falling within the corridor area, will be spared.Earlier, the marking exercise undertaken by the Gaya Municipal Corporation to identify structures for the project was suspended by the district magistrate following protests from a section of those likely to be affected by the proposed demolition. Some Gayawal Pandas believe the corridor project will prove to be a blessing in disguise as it would remove large-scale encroachments on public land around the Vishnupad temple and the western bank of the Falgu river. Encroachers will not be entitled to compensation as they have no proprietary rights over such land. The project proposes widening the approach road from Chandauti Chauraha to the temple from 12 metres to 24 metres. It also includes redevelopment of ghats, Tulsi Park, a suspension bridge to Sita Kund, a Vishnu Cultural Centre, beautification of five ponds and installation of a 108-ft idol of Lord Vishnu in the middle of the Falgu river.
