Chennai: DMK legal wing joint secretary I Paranthamen on Saturday said police had pressured arrested Tiruchendur DMK MLA Anitha R Radhakrishnan to resign as MLA during questioning.
“What was the need for questioning an MLA for six hours in a defamation case when the arrest itself was unnecessary,” he asked.Speaking to reporters at the DMK headquarters in Chennai, Paranthamen, a former MLA from Egmore, said the court’s decision to grant bail to Anitha Radhakrishnan showed there was no basis to keep him in custody. “The case was politically motivated and aimed at tarnishing the image of DMK through allegations of horse-trading,” he said.
“Anitha Radhakrsihnan said he was offered money to resign. This calls for a thorough explanation from the govt,” Paranthamen said.Comparing TVK with the BJP govt at the Centre, Paranthaman said while BJP used ED to pressure opposition leaders to switch sides, the TVK govt was using the state police for the same purpose. “TVK is attempting to engineer defections instead of focusing on governance,” Paranthamen said.
