US President Donald Trump is expected to attend the FIFA Club World Cup final on Sunday, July 13, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. However, his presence may come with a hefty price tag for American taxpayers.

According to Sport Bible, Trump’s appearance at the match between Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea could incur costs similar to some of his previous outings, with taxpayer-funded expenses potentially reaching upwards of $2,50,000 (around Rs 2.14 crore).

The figure accounts for extensive security measures, transport arrangements and accommodation for the Secret Service, who provide protection for the 79-year-old during his public appearances.

Trump has made a habit of attending major sporting events during his second term in office. In June, he was seen cageside at UFC 316 at the Prudential Center in Newark, alongside UFC President Dana White. That event saw several fighters interact with Trump, including women’s bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison, who placed her championship belt around his waist in a public show of support.

Though the exact cost of Trump’s UFC appearance has not been confirmed, Sport Bible reports that similar past events suggest a comparable bill. In one example, Trump’s trip to New York City for UFC 244 in 2019 reportedly cost US taxpayers over $2,52,000 (around Rs 2.16 crore).

According to figures cited by The Daily Mail, the Secret Service spent $224,212 (around Rs 1.92 crore) on hotel rooms, $22,005 (around Rs 18.88 lakh) on transportation costs and $6,350 (around Rs 5.44 lakh) on setting up tents for security screening near Trump Tower, where he stayed the night.

With the Club World Cup final scheduled just nine miles from the Prudential Center, the cost of security and logistics for Trump’s attendance is expected to be in the same range.

Paris Saint-Germain earned their place in the final with a 4-0 win over Real Madrid. Premier League giants Chelsea booked their spot with a 2-0 victory against Brazilian side Fluminense, setting up a blockbuster final.

While thousands of fans are expected to descend on MetLife Stadium to watch the clash between the two European giants, Trump’s anticipated appearance has turned attention to the soaring costs of securing high-profile political figures at sporting events.
