Fueled by the excitement for the 2026 World Cup, US President Donald Trump stated on Friday that American football should be renamed, asserting that the game played with a round ball, soccer, is the true football.

Speaking at the FIFA World Cup draw on Friday, Trump acknowledged the existing conflict in terminology, highlighting that “this is football, there is no question" and suggesting the NFL (National Football League) should adopt a different name.

For Americans, “football" typically refers to a sport mainly involving the use of hands, markedly different from what the rest of the world knows as football. Each year, nearly the entire nation watches the NFL championship final, the Super Bowl. FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized to Americans that the 2026 World Cup would be equivalent to 104 Super Bowls.

As an avid sports fan, Trump’s interest in soccer has been steadily growing as the 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted in the United States, Mexico, and Canada next summer, draws nearer.
