National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is set to hold a crucial high-level meeting with US Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio on Sunday, with discussions expected to centre around China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific, cross-border terrorism, maritime security and the escalating situation in West Asia, CNN News18 has exclusively learnt.
The meeting between the Indian and American delegations comes amid rising geopolitical tensions globally and is expected to cover a wide-ranging strategic agenda involving defence cooperation, intelligence sharing, energy security and regional stability.
According to the details, Doval is expected to brief the American side on India’s security concerns in South Asia and seek stronger US support for action against terror safe havens operating in the region.
The talks are expected to heavily focus on intelligence sharing and coordinated counter-terror efforts against Pakistan-based terror outfits such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, along with ISIS-linked affiliates.
Top government sources also indicated that both countries are likely to deliberate on the growing nexus between drug cartels, organised crime networks and terrorism, including the role of gangsters in facilitating criminal and extremist activities across borders.
A major component of the Doval-Rubio discussions is expected to revolve around strengthening cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly on issues linked to maritime security and freedom of navigation.
The two sides are also expected to discuss measures aimed at countering China’s growing influence in the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean region.
Both delegations are likely to discuss strengthening the Quad framework and enhancing information sharing on maritime domain awareness.
The meeting is also expected to review the potential expansion of joint military exercises such as Malabar, while both countries may discuss the strategic importance of securing critical maritime supply routes and supply chains.
The strategic dialogue is also expected to focus on deeper military cooperation and joint defence production under initiatives such as the India-US Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET).
Sources indicated that discussions may include technology transfer, co-development of advanced systems and strengthening defence-industrial collaboration between the two countries.
The talks are expected to reinforce the growing defence and strategic partnership between New Delhi and Washington at a time when both nations are seeking closer alignment on regional security challenges.
ENERGY SECURITY AND WEST ASIA CONCERNS
Energy security is also expected to emerge as a key focus area during the discussions, especially amid ongoing tensions in West Asia and concerns over global energy supply disruptions.
The two sides are likely to deliberate on increasing cooperation in clean energy, critical minerals and nuclear energy, while also exploring LNG supplies, renewable technology partnerships and joint investments in energy infrastructure.
Sources close to the government further indicated that the talks will cover the evolving situation in Gaza and Iran, along with its possible impact on global energy prices and regional security.

RUBIO-PM MODI MEETING LAID GROUNDWORK
The Doval-Rubio engagement follows Rubio’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, where the two leaders discussed the Middle East situation, trade ties, defence cooperation and emerging technologies.
According to the US State Department, Rubio stated during the meeting that the United States “will not let Iran hold the global energy market hostage" and highlighted the potential of American energy products to diversify India’s energy basket.
Prime Minister Modi later said on X that both democracies discussed issues related to “regional and global peace and security" and would continue to work closely for the “global good".
RUBIO CALLS INDIA PARTNERSHIP ‘CRUCIAL’
During an address at the US Embassy Support Annex Building dedication ceremony in New Delhi, Rubio described the India-US partnership as a “cornerstone" of Washington’s strategic priorities.
“It is at the cornerstone of this important partnership between us and India, which, as I said, is an incredibly important one," Rubio said, while reaffirming America’s commitment to strengthening ties with India.
He also hinted at further developments in bilateral cooperation in the coming months, saying both countries could soon make “more exciting and new announcements" regarding the relationship.
QUAD TALKS AND DIPLOMATIC ENGAGEMENTS
Rubio’s India visit, which runs from May 23 to 26, includes stops in Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi.
The visit also carries major diplomatic significance due to the upcoming Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on May 26.
