Bayern’s 16-year-old goalkeeper, Leonard Prescott could make a historic UCL debut. But, only if German labour laws allow it.
A permit, not form, may decide his fate.
Bayern Wonderkid’s Dream Debut Hinges on Labour Law
Remember Leonard Prescott? Bayern Munich’s 16-year-old goalkeeper, who could be thrown straight into a Champions League night?
Well, his biggest obstacle right now isn’t nerves, form, or even the opposition.
It’s German labour law.
Because Prescott is under 18, Bayern Munich can’t simply pick him and play.
Under Germany’s Jugendarbeitsschutzgesetz (Youth Employment Protection Act), minors are not allowed to work after 8 PM.
That’s a problem. A big one — because Bayern’s Champions League clash against Atalanta kicks off at 9 PM and runs well past 11.
To feature, Prescott needs a special exemption permit — not from football authorities, but from a government trade supervisory body.
And it’s not a simple sign-off either. Approval requires consent from his parents, his school, and even a paediatrician.
According to German outlet Gazpachen, Bayern have already applied.
And it doesn’t end there. Even if the permit is granted, the law still steps in.
Prescott would then be entitled to 12 hours of uninterrupted rest, meaning Bayern couldn’t involve him in training until at least midday the next day.
Why Bayern Might Need Him
This isn’t just a quirky story, it’s a real selection dilemma.
Bayern are currently without multiple goalkeepers, including Manuel Neuer, leaving them dangerously thin between the posts. Other options are either injured or unlikely to be risked.
Which leaves one extraordinary possibility: a 16-year-old, with zero senior appearances, starting a Champions League knockout game.
From Ball Boy to History?
Not long ago, Prescott was a ball boy at the Allianz Arena.
Now, he could become the youngest goalkeeper in Champions League history, making his debut at just 16 years and 176 days.
It’s the kind of story football thrives on — if the paperwork goes through.
