Mumbai has unveiled India’s first musical road, where motorists driving along a designated stretch of the Coastal Road can hear the iconic Bollywood song Jai Ho through specially installed grooves in the road surface.
The innovative project was inaugurated on Wednesday by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, former Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale, who came up with the idea, Hungary’s Consul General Faren Jari, and BMC officials were present at the launch.
Fadnavis called the musical road as a “delightful experience" for motorists and said the concept, based on Hungarian technology, could be expanded in the future.
“In the first phase, the concept has been implemented on a 500-metre stretch of the Coastal Road, and there are plans to expand the musical road concept further," Fadnavis said.
Shinde also encouraged Mumbaikars to experience the musical road and suggested that the concept could also be tried on the Samruddhi Expressway as a pilot project.
About The Mumbai Melody Road
The musical stretch has been developed on the northbound carriageway of the Coastal Road, running from Nariman Point towards Worli. Civic officials said it is located in the first lane adjoining the divider, around 500 metres after vehicles exit the Worli-bound underground tunnel.
The road features grooves or rumble strips of precise dimensions and spacing. When vehicles pass over them at 70 to 80 kmph, the vibrations from the tyres produce musical notes, forming the melody of Jai Ho, composed by A.R. Rahman with lyrics by Gulzar.
Signboards have been placed at 500 metres, 100 metres, and 60 metres before the stretch to alert drivers about the upcoming musical section and the required speed.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), this is the fifth such musical road in the world and the first in India.
The Coastal Road, named after Dharmaveer Swarajyarakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, is a major infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic congestion and enabling faster travel, now offering a unique cultural and engineering experience.
Musical roads, also called melody roads, were first developed in Japan in 2007 and have since been implemented in countries such as Hungary, South Korea, and the UAE.
The BMC hailed the project as a blend of engineering innovation and cultural expression, giving Mumbaikars a patriotic and musical experience as they drive.
