A cash transit vehicle driver was arrested by the Sultan Bazar police within 48 hours for allegedly fleeing with ₹9.63 lakh meant for deposit at a bank in Koti.
The accused was identified as Shaik Rahman, 46, a driver residing at Hasmathpet in Bowenpally.
According to the police, the incident took place on May 19 when cash custodians from Cleared Security Services Private Ltd (CSS), along with a gunman and driver, were transporting cash collections in a Toyota Innova Crysta vehicle bearing registration number TG 11 UC 0180.
Police said the team collected cash from various business establishments, before reaching the SBI main branch at Bank Street in Koti at around 2.20 p.m. to deposit the money.
While two custodians went inside the bank carrying a part of the cash and the gunman briefly stepped away to use the washroom, the driver allegedly fled with the vehicle, which still contained ₹19 lakh in five bags.
The vehicle was later found abandoned near District Hospital at King Koti. Upon opening it using a duplicate key, officials found that two cash bags were missing.
Police said the stolen amount comprised ₹5,88,932 collected from D-Mart and ₹3,74,533 collected from Mangalya Shopping Mall, totalling ₹9,63,465.
Using technical surveillance and investigation, police traced the accused to Gulbarga in Karnataka.
A special police team conducted a raid at Sabera Guest House near the Gulbarga bus stand on May 21 at around 6.00 p.m. and apprehended the accused. Police recovered ₹9,53,760 in cash, a mobile phone, and a bag.
