Panic gripped Sonpokhari village in Jharkhand after a suspected explosive device was discovered during ploughing of an agricultural field in the Manoharpur police station area. The object, believed to resemble an old mortar shell or bomb, was found buried beneath the soil, prompting police to launch an investigation.

According to local residents, the incident occurred around 9 am when a tractor was being used to plough a field belonging to Vijay Hembrom. During the operation, tractor driver Shiv Charan Mahato sensed that the vehicle had struck a heavy object hidden underground. Suspecting something unusual, he stopped the tractor and inspected the area.

On closer examination, Mahato noticed a long, rusted metallic object partially buried in the soil. Realising it could be a potentially dangerous explosive, he immediately informed the landowner and nearby villagers. News of the discovery quickly spread across the village, drawing a large number of curious residents to the spot.

Speaking about the incident, Mahato and Hembrom said they were initially unaware of the nature of the object and even attempted to lift it manually. They estimated it to be nearly two feet long and weighing around 30 kilograms. However, after noticing its unusual appearance, they decided not to touch it further and alerted the police.

MANY SUSPECTED IT AS AN OLD MORTAR SHELL

Residents said the object appeared ancient and heavily corroded. Based on its shape and structure, many suspect it could be an old mortar shell or unexploded ordnance. However, authorities said its exact nature can only be determined after examination by bomb disposal and forensic experts.

Upon receiving information, Manoharpur Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) David A. Dodray, along with a police team, reached the site and began an inquiry. Police have cordoned off the area and urged villagers to maintain a safe distance from the object and avoid any attempts to handle it.

Officials said that if the object turns out to be a live explosive, a major accident could have occurred during the ploughing operation. They noted that the tractor driver's alertness and prompt reporting helped avert a potentially serious incident. Further investigation is underway.
