Drunk man climbs 11,000-volt electricity pole, lies on wires in UP village

A drunken man's bizarre stunt atop an 11,000-volt electricity pole triggered panic in Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj district on Tuesday evening, with villagers fearing a fatal accident.

The man, Deen Dayal, climbed a high-voltage electricity pole in Parsa Khurd village and stretched himself across the overhead power lines. As news of the incident spread, residents rushed to the spot, and a large crowd gathered below, anxiously watching him remain perched above.

According to locals, a stroke of luck prevented a tragedy. Power supply to the line had reportedly been cut just minutes before Deen Dayal climbed the pole. Villagers said the stunt could have turned fatal if electricity had been flowing through the line.

As the man refused to come down, police and electricity department officials launched a coordinated effort to avert any mishap. Bhitauli police immediately contacted the power department and ensured that electricity supply to the line remained suspended during the rescue operation.

For several hours, villagers, police personnel and officials appealed to Deen Dayal to climb down. Their efforts eventually succeeded, and he descended safely from the pole, drawing relief from the crowd gathered at the scene.

Bhitauli Station House Officer Satyendra Kumar Rai said the man was under the influence of alcohol when he climbed the electricity pole.

"A man under the influence of alcohol had climbed an electricity pole. We coordinated with the power department and persuaded him to come down safely. He was later handed over to his family members," Rai said.

No injuries were reported in the incident. Officials credited the swift coordination between the police and the electricity department for preventing what could have been a serious accident.
