The former Barca and Liverpool superstar revealed he has had to fight for everything and battle criticism through his illustrious career in a moment of profound reflection.

Uruguay legend Luis Suarez opened up about his penchant to fight for every quarter on the field, touching up on the challenging circumstances he has had to overcome throughout his life.

The former Barca and Liverpool superstar revealed he has had to fight for everything and stand up to criticism levelled against him throughout his illustrious career for club and country.

Suarez had been embroiled in multiple controversies including incidents of biting players, and racial abuse, but his astounding abilities on the field were such that his performances pushed everything else into the background. The striker revealed that on the field, his fighter instinct always comes out on top.

“At Ajax they told me I am too fat. At Liverpool they attacked me because of my bad behavior. At Barcelona they attacked me because of periods where I was in bad form. I have had to fight in every phase in my career," Suarez said.

“Ever since I was a little kid I have had to fight. I was always outside to find food, to make sure me and my family could eat, and with always I mean always. Ever since I can remember have always had to fight," he added.

“At the same time, I realize that there have been moments where I don’t set the right example. Sometimes my wife and kids can’t believe it when they hear my scream. But that way of being.. that rebellion that’s within me, that fighting, that’s what made me," the 38-year-old said.

“I have tried to change that. But sometimes when I am on the pitch, the personality that I just described, it simply wins."

Born in Salto, he had youth spells with Sportivo Artigas, Urreta before joining Nacional, with whom he made his senior debut in the year 2005. He made the switch to Europe with Groningen in 2006, before catching the eye of Ajax who roped the maverick in 2007. Suarez rocked up on English shores with Liverpool on the back of a succesful stint at Amsterdam and boosted his profile with his headline showings for the Merseyside club between 2011 ad 2014.

Suarez linked up with Lionel Messi at Barcelona in 2014 and enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at the Catalan club before moving to Atletico Madrid in 2020, where he led the Rojiblancos to the La Liga title. He returned to Uruguay with Nacional in 2022 and played for a brief time in Brazil with Gremio, before teaming up with eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi at Inter Miami.
