The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Sunday carried out searches at multiple locations in Kolkata in connection with alleged land grabbing and financial fraud cases linked to fugitive criminal ‘Sona Pappu’, news agency PTI reported, citing a senior official.

The probe agency conducted raids at the residences of two businessmen, viz., Kalyan Shukla and Sanjay Kanodia, in Anandapur and Alipore areas in connection with the case.

“The searches are part of an ongoing investigation into financial irregularities and suspected links with absconding accused Sona Pappu," the ED official said, requesting anonymity.

Sona Pappu, who is considered a key accused in cases related to land grabbing and financial fraud, has been on the run for some time.

According to police officials, he maintained close ties with several businessmen, prompting the agency to widen its probe. “We have obtained crucial leads during questioning, which led us to these premises," the ED said.

The ED is examining the role of the two businessmen in the alleged financial misconduct, and whether they acted as conduits for illicit transactions, he added.

Last week, the ED conducted searches at multiple locations in Kolkata as part of an ongoing probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Among the premises raided were the residence of Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas in Ballygunge and that of Sun Enterprise Managing Director Joy Kamdar in Behala.

Out of the three premises, two belonged to Biswas and one to Kamdar. “These raids are being conducted under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Sona Pappu and Joy Kamdar case," ANI quoted officials as saying.

It was learnt that Kamdar was detained following the raids.

Kolkata and adjoining areas have seen multiple investigations in recent years involving land transactions, shell entities, financial irregularities and alleged fraud networks.
