Amid growing public concern over reports of cancer-causing substances being detected in eggs, the Food Safety and Standards Department has gone on alert across Karnataka, including Bengaluru.
The department has collected egg samples from more than 200 locations across the state, with over 50 sampling points in Bengaluru alone. Samples have been gathered from supermarkets, malls and local markets to assess food safety standards.
Officials said the collected egg samples will be sent for laboratory testing, following discussions around the presence of AOZ, a substance suspected to be carcinogenic. The Food Safety Department is in the process of preparing a detailed report based on the test results.
The issue has triggered anxiety among consumers, with fears that eggs could potentially be linked to serious illnesses such as cancer. Officials indicated that the lab report is likely to be submitted to the Health Department by next week, after which further action, if required, will be decided.
As part of the statewide drive, the Food Safety Department has collected egg samples from several key localities across Bengaluru. Sampling has been carried out in RR Nagar, Kengeri, BTM Layout, Koramangala, Yeshwanthpur, Vasanthnagar, Sanjaynagar, Chamarajpet, Hebbal and KR Puram.
Officials said samples were also collected along Mysuru Road and surrounding areas, taking the total number of sampling points in Bengaluru to more than 50. The samples have been sent for laboratory testing, and a consolidated report is expected next week.
