In a dramatic incident in West Bengal’s Howrah district, people gathered outside the residence of Trinamool Congress (TMC) block president Sitanath Ganguly and hurled eggs at him over corruption allegations.

A video went viral on social media, showing a scantily-clad Ganguly being pelted with eggs outside his residence in Bally, while one man prevented him from escaping inside his home. People also hurled abuses at the local TMC leader and accused him of corruption.

The public fury stemmed from allegations that Ganguly amassed massive wealth over the last 15 years, transforming a humble one-room hut into a palatial mansion by extorting locals and siphoning funds meant for government welfare schemes.

Since the TMC’s defeat in the recent Assembly elections, several party leaders have been pelted with eggs amid mounting public anger. An angry crowd allegedly attacked TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee by pelting eggs and bricks at him in Sonarpur on May 30, while he was visiting a worker’s residence.

Other TMC leaders have also been at the receiving end of the egg-pelting incident. On June 6, senior TMC leader Madan Mitra’s convoy was peppered with eggs. More recently, senior TMC leader Sapan Samanta was garlanded with shoes, made to perform sit-ups and pelted with eggs and tomatoes in Hooghly.

TMC’s Kunal Ghosh was also attacked as he was leaving the high-security zone adjacent to former Chief Minister Banerjee’s residence. Kolkata Police arrested two individuals in connection with the incident after Ghosh lodged a complaint at the Kalighat police station.

The TMC has accused the police of being mute spectators while its leaders and workers were targeted in the post-poll violence. The BJP has framed it as a public response to 15 years of “oppression" under TMC in West Bengal.
