Indian squash player Abhay Singh picked up his biggest triumph of his career so far with a win over Frenchman Gregoire Marche in his opening round of the Egyptian Open on Saturday.

Singh got the better of the World No. 17 Marche in the PSA World Tour Diamond event, with the promise of USD 366,000 prize money, in Giza.

World No. 38 and multiple-time national champion Abhay prevailed 12-10, 11-9, 11-3 in 36 minutes, marking his best result against a higher-ranked opponent.

Abhay, who trains at the Indian Squash Academy in Chennai, will next compete against 10th seed Youssef Ibrahim of Egypt in the round of 32.

In contrast, reigning national champion Velavan Senthilkumar faced disappointment, losing to Britain’s world No. 28 Jonah Bryant 8-11, 11-5, 9-11, 1-11 in his first-round match.
