A 72-year-old man was shot dead on Tuesday night in the Khaira police station area of Jamui, Bihar. The incident occurred around 9 pm. The victim has been identified as Anandi Modi.
Police arrived at the scene shortly after being informed. Preliminary reports suggest the murder was linked to a land dispute. A search operation is underway to arrest the killers.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the deteriorating law and order situation in the poll-bound state.
Union Minister Chirag Paswan has also criticised the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government over the rising crime rate. He expressed disappointment at supporting a regime where crime remains unchecked.
Paswan stated that incidents of crime are occurring across the state and accused the administration of failing to control the situation.
“The administration is completely submissive before the criminals,” Paswan said. “Incidents of murder, robbery, kidnapping, and rape are continuously taking place in Bihar.”
He further accused the government of either attempting to cover up the situation or being unable to manage it. “There is a need for the government to wake up in time,” he added.
Earlier this month, business tycoon Gopal Khemka, owner of Magadh Hospital, was shot dead in Patna as he stepped out of his car near his residence.
The mastermind behind Khemka’s murder, identified as trader Ashok Saw, was later arrested. He is believed to have arranged the killing through a contract worth Rs 10 lakh.
A key accused in the case, who had allegedly supplied the murder weapon, was killed in a police encounter in Patna City’s Mal Salami area on July 8.
