Elderly woman dies as truck rams two-wheeler; two including child injured

Trichy: A 72-year-old woman was killed and two others, including a child, were injured after a dumper truck carrying gravel from a quarry collided with their vehicle near Trichy on Friday.The victim, identified as Alagammal, from Usilampatti, was riding pillion on a two-wheeler driven by Maheshwari, 32. Maheshwari’s one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Kayasri was also with them.While taking a curve at the Malaikaradu area near Seekampatti, their vehicle was hit by a truck coming from the opposite direction that was loaded with earthen materials from a private quarry.Alagammal sustained severe injuries and died on the spot.

Maheshwari and Kayasri were injured.The injured were admitted to a private hospital in Thuvarankurichi and are undergoing treatment. Thuvarankurichi police registered a case and are investigating the incident.Meanwhile, people from various villages blocked the Trichy-Madurai National Highway at Sevandampatti. They alleged that quarries operating in their region were leading to similar accidents frequently due to heavy truck movements.

They also claimed that the roads were getting damaged by the trucks.Officials from the revenue and police departments went to the spot and held talks with the protesters. Officials assured them that action would be taken soon. The public then withdrew the protest and dispersed. The road blockade affected traffic on the Trichy-Madurai Highway for about half an hour.
