The Election Commission’s flying squads and static surveillance teams seized nearly Rs 3 lakh in unaccounted cash, which was subsequently deposited in the treasury, during vehicle checks in Chennai on Wednesday.

This operation is part of intensified enforcement measures ahead of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections on April 23.

According to the Election Commission’s standard operating procedures and the model code of conduct, goods valued over Rs 10,000 without valid documents and cash exceeding Rs 50,000 carried without proper proof are subject to seizure.

The seized amount can be reclaimed if valid documents are later submitted to the appellate authority.

In Chennai district, 48 flying squads (three per constituency) and 48 static surveillance teams have been deployed. Operating in three shifts, these teams monitor violations and take action.

On Wednesday, flying squads seized Rs 55,400 in the Velachery constituency, while static teams confiscated Rs 51,000 in Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar and Rs 1,89,900 in Harbour constituency, bringing the total seized to Rs 2,96,300.
