The Eluru district police have unearthed a child selling racket in which nine persons, including a few women, have been identified as accused.
The Mudinepalli police, who registered a case on Saturday, rescued two babies during the investigation. The infants include a girl reportedly kidnapped from Uttar Pradesh and a boy who was allegedly sold by the gang.
According to the investigating officers, the baby girl was sold for ₹3 lakh while the baby boy was sold for ₹50,000.
“We suspect that the gang may have sold more babies. A staff member of a private hospital and a woman who was earlier arrested in a child trafficking case were involved in the Kaikaluru-based child selling gang,” an investigating officer told The Hindu. Efforts are on to arrest the remaining members of the gang.
A detailed investigation into the child selling racket is under way. The rescued babies will be produced before the Eluru District Child Welfare Committee (CWC), the officer said.
