Emma Thompson has revealed a rather unexpected moment from her past involving the current US President, Donald Trump.The actress recently shared a surprising story from the late ’90s, revealing that Trump once called her out of the blue. Speaking at the 2025 Locarno Film Festival, the 66-year-old actress recalled that it happened while she was filming ‘Primary Colors’ in 1998, shortly after her divorce from Kenneth Branagh.According to Deadline, Emma recalled, “He said, ‘Hello, this is Donald Trump?' I thought it was a joke and asked, ‘How can I help you? Maybe he needed directions from someone."“And then he said, ‘I’d love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner,’” she continued, while imitating Trump‘s voice. “I said, well, that’s very sweet. Thank you so much. I’ll get back to you,” she added.Emma realised the call came on the same day her divorce papers were finalised.

She guessed that Trump, who was also newly separated from Marla Maples at the time, might have been looking for a “nice divorcee” to be seen with. She said, “I realised that on that day, my divorce decree had come through, and I bet he’s got people looking for suitable people he could take out on his arm. You know, a nice divorcee, that’s what he was looking for.

And he found the number in my trailer. I mean, that’s stalking.”Laughing about it now, Emma joked and said, “I could have gone on a date with Donald Trump, and then I would have a story to tell,” the Love Actually star added. “I could have changed the course of American history.”
