For daily commuters on Bengaluru’s Namma Metro Green Line, the sight of overcrowded platforms and packed coaches has long been a frustrating reality. However, a significant turning point has arrived at the Peenya Depot.

The first “Made in India" 6-coach train, manufactured by Titagarh Rail Systems in Kolkata, has officially reached the city, marking the beginning of a major fleet expansion aimed at slashing wait times and easing peak-hour congestion.

A Rigorous Testing Phase

While the train is physically in Bengaluru, it won’t be picking up passengers just yet. Over the next eight weeks, BMRCL engineers will put the new rolling stock through a series of exhaustive safety and performance evaluations.

These include night-time trial runs on the main line, where the train must successfully clock approximately 750 kilometers of trouble-free travel. These “Inspection Bay" tests are crucial to ensure that the domestic technology integrates seamlessly with the existing signalling systems.

A Summer Launch

If the trials proceed as planned, commuters can expect to see these new coaches in regular service by May or June. This timeline coincides with the arrival of a second train from Titagarh, expected later this month, and a prototype train previously received from China.

By bolstering the fleet, BMRCL aims to increase the frequency of trips, specifically targeting the “crush load" periods in the mornings and evenings when the Green Line connecting Nagasandra to Silk Institute reaches its maximum capacity.

“The addition of these domestic trains is a milestone for Bengaluru’s infrastructure. It not only supports ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ but provides a practical solution to the daily struggle of thousands of metro users," stated a BMRCL technical source.

Expanding the Network

The arrival of the Green Line train is just the first wave of a larger rolling stock upgrade. Starting in April, the focus will shift back to the highly anticipated Yellow Line, with Titagarh set to deliver seven more trains.

Following that, a steady stream of 18 additional trains is slated for delivery, which will be distributed across both the Purple and Green lines to ensure the entire network can handle the city’s ever-growing ridership.
