Thomas Tuchel has revealed his 26-member men’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which begins on June 12. Unlike his predecessor, Gareth Southgate, Tuchel seems to have preferred an identity and picked specific profiles according to it, instead of just looking at the biggest stars or the most in-form players.
This has meant prodigious talents like Manchester City’s Phil Foden, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, and Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold miss out. Tuchel has surprised with call-ups for Arsenal’s Premier League-winning winger Noni Madueke, Newcastle United full-back Tino Livramento, and Al Ahli striker Ivan Toney.
Madueke has six goal contributions in the Premier League and the Champions League this season, as he has played second-fiddle to Bukayo Saka for the Gunners. Saka is expected to start for England whenever possible, too, though Madueke brings the flexibility of playing on the left wing as well.
Livramento has missed most of the season due to injury, but so has Trent. Toney has been brilliant in the Saudi Pro League, though some would question how much weight the quality of a league carries.
Other surprises include Harry Maguire’s absence, especially after the Manchester United defender announced he was ‘one of the best defenders in the world’ last year, Djed Spence getting the nod over Newcastle’s Lewis Hall and Brentford’s veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson getting retained.
Manchester United finds representation through young sensation Kobie Mainoo, while Liverpool is the only top-six club without any squad members making the cut.
