The fallout from FIFA’s controversial decision to suspend Folarin Balogun’s World Cup ban has now reached England.
British politicians are now urging world football’s governing body to grant Jarell Quansah the same disciplinary reprieve ahead of the Three Lions’ quarter-final against Norway.
The controversy, already one of the defining off-field stories of the tournament, intensified after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly confirmed he had contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino regarding Balogun’s suspension.
Although Infantino insisted FIFA’s independent judicial bodies made the final decision, the ruling has triggered widespread criticism and allegations that political pressure may have influenced football’s disciplinary process.
According to Reuters, the English FA is considering its options regarding a possible appeal, while FIFA has not responded to repeated requests for comment on whether Quansah’s case could also be considered under Article 27 of its disciplinary regulations.

MPs Demand Equal Treatment
Labour MPs Noah Law and Melanie Onn have both written to Infantino, arguing that Quansah should receive the same treatment as Balogun after the England defender was sent off during Sunday’s dramatic 3-2 Round of 16 victory over Mexico.
Like Balogun, Quansah is facing an automatic one-match suspension.
“Whilst I believe it was right for Jarell Quansah to have received his red card… I believe it would be right to delay his suspension until after the completion of this World Cup," Law wrote.
Onn echoed that stance, arguing there was a “strong case" for delaying Quansah’s suspension and warning it would be difficult to justify one player benefiting from a deferred ban while another in materially similar circumstances could not.
Both MPs said FIFA risked undermining confidence in its disciplinary system unless its rules were applied consistently across all teams.
Parliament Seeks Answers From FIFA
The pressure has also reached Westminster.
Caroline Dinenage, Chair of the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee, called on FIFA to urgently explain the legal basis behind Balogun’s reprieve.
“England’s inspirational victory in the early hours showed the World Cup at its very best, but this ruling by FIFA is threatening to cast a dark shadow on a tournament that should be a worldwide celebration of football," Dinenage said.
“For sport to mean anything, its rules and laws must be applied equally to all teams. FIFA needs to come out urgently and explain the basis of its decision and address the suggestions that there may have been political interference in the process."
FIFA has repeatedly maintained that its judicial bodies acted independently in Balogun’s case. Still, with England preparing to face Norway in Saturday’s quarter-final in Miami, the governing body is now under mounting pressure to prove that its disciplinary system applies the same standard to everyone.
