Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday said English would never form part of the organisation’s core functioning, asserting that it is not an Indian language, though it may be used where required.

Speaking at a gathering in Mumbai, Bhagwat clarified that the Sangh does not oppose any language but believes Indian languages must remain central to its ethos and functioning.

“English will never be a part of the Sangh’s methodology because it is not an Indian language. However, we do use it wherever it becomes necessary. We do not quarrel with any language. We must remain rooted in who we are," he said.

Bhagwat also questioned the routine use of English expressions and conventions in everyday and official life.

Referring to common practices, he asked why signatures or familial references needed to be in a foreign language. “Why should a signature be in English? One can sign in one’s mother tongue. Why must it be ‘Mommy-Daddy’? Can’t it be ‘Mataji-Pitaji’?" he said.

The RSS chief was addressing the concluding session of a two-day lecture series titled ‘100 Years of Sangh Journey: New Horizons’, organised in Mumbai as part of the organisation’s centenary outreach.

A day earlier, Bhagwat had emphasised the importance of cultural self-awareness, urging Indians to preserve their traditions, particularly within their homes.

While acknowledging that practical circumstances may require adjustments in public spaces, he said cultural practices should remain intact in private life.

“We are Indians. We have our own languages, attire and traditions. At least inside our homes, our language, clothing, prayers, food, houses and travel habits should reflect our own culture," he said.

Bhagwat added that language, attire, devotional songs, food and lifestyle are key elements that nurture a sense of identity. “When these become part of our daily lives, especially at home, they awaken a strong sense of self-identity," he said.
